Employment of atmospheric scientists, including
meteorologists, is projected to grow 5% from 2022 to 2032 in
the USA, faster than the 3% average for all occupations. The best job
prospects for atmospheric scientists will be in private industry.
Another job path is with the airlines, where 20,000 new pilots will be
needed each year for the next 20 years*. One of the more popular jobs is with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). An overview of
government forecaster jobs in Canada is at https://www.eco.ca/career-profiles/meteorologist/ .
For undergrad students, we offer Bachelor of Science, Honours Bachelor of Science,
and co-op programs in ATSC. You can also get a combined Bachelors such
as Computer Science and ATSC. Many students transfer in to the ATSC program after one or two years at other colleges or universities.
For those of you nearly finished with your bachelors in science or
engineering, consider grad school in ATSC (Thesis Masters, Non-thesis
Masters, Co-op Masters, and PhD degrees).
Finally, regardless of your major, ATSC offers fun courses with no
prerequisites, which you can take online from anywhere in the
world. For example:
• ATSC 113 Weather Science for Sailing, Flying and Snow Sports .
A sample of other interesting ATSC courses (having prerequisites) include:
• ATSC 201 Meteorology of Storms
• ATSC 313 Renewable Energy Meteorology
• ATSC 413 Forest Fire Weather & Climate
For a complete list of courses, see the ATSC website: https://atsc.eoas.ubc.ca/
